M, aka Reeve Malka, is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, audio engineer, actor/puppeteer, genealogist, anthropologist & historian of the ancient world. Given his breadth of skill, M is regarded as a conceptual artist than just solely a songwriter. His work ranges from electro-acoustic sound art incorporating Ligeti-esque strings & woodwind, to ethnic & electro-pop.
M began his musical training at an early age, first learning percussion before moving onto keyboards, guitar, bass & drums, all self-taught, and including unusual instruments such as the dulcimer oud, saz, jaws harp, vibraphone & marimba. At the age of 15 a fascination in electronic music led to the addition of synthesizers & samplers to his musical repertoire and later leading to collaborations with various electronic groups.
M has collaborated with American singer/songwriter Jarboe (ex Swans) in 1998 on music for her albums Disburden Disciple (1999) & Knight of Swords (2005) and Israeli progressive metal band, Orphaned Land, on their albums El Norra Alila & Mabool. His other projects include working with Sol Invictus, an English neofolk & neolassical group fronted by Tony Wakeford; The Triple Tree, a neo-folk album collaboration between Tony Wakeford & Andrew King; The Cutmen, an experimental group featuring the legendary z’ev fusing industrial beats with home-made instruments made from scrap materials; folk band Zunroyz, a Ukrainian folk band; and The Native, described as: “an energy pill of electro-pop infused with Middle Eastern & cabaret influences”.
M has a particular affinity with Middle Eastern music due to his Israeli heritage, and modal & instrumental nods to the region are interwoven throughout M’s own music (see album Documenting Nature Abuse & other releases).
As well as a musician, M is also a freelance audio engineer. He produces & mixes all his own projects and runs a portable studio providing recording, mixing & mastering services to all types of artists. In 1995 M founded and continues to run Infinite Document, a production label for unique projects showing depth & individuality. He also co-runs the Tursa label with Tony Wakeford. Other projects & collaborations with Tony Wakeford include The Gild, an aural document of various subjects, as well as the “dark, classical, experimental music” of Orchestra Noir.
